Large investments in Pakistan’s shipbreaking sector
Karachi: Minister of State for Industries & Production Dr Ayatullah Durrani has said that investors are putting huge investment in Pakistan's ship breaking industry at Gadani. He was talking with the media during his visit to ship breaking industry at Gadani in Balochistan on Thursday.
"In order to produce quality products and to enhance exports, all industries are to be upgraded by inducting latest technology," he said.
He assured the representatives of the ship breaking sector that provision of gas, water, electricity, medical facilities and other amenities will be ensured in the area on priority.
Durrani announced that a housing scheme for labourers would soon be launched in Gadani, comprising 1,000 housing units.
Moreover, a utility store will also be set up in Gadani.
The Minister stated that after Steel Mills, the Gadani ship breaking industry is the biggest industry which is providing steel to the industrial sector to meet their growing demand.
The minister was informed that since September 2008 at least 82 ships have been anchored at the Gadani shore for breaking purposes. [12/06/09]
