TNT Dry Freight Review - 13 January 2009

PANAMAX
=======
Atlantic Panamax business faltered today, with very little fresh
inquiry heard in the market.  Demand for trans-Atlantic rounds appears
to be fading and with owners reluctant to head for the over-tonnaged
Pacific, we could see a sharp drop in rates by Thursday.  Short period
business in the Atlantic saw an LME fix spot for 3-5 months at a lower
$8,500 daily.  Although there has been more demand seen from China
this week, rates in the Pacific are making no headway.  The
overwhelming amount of available tonnage continues to stifle rate
gains.  Limited interest in period fixtures has seen rates for about
1-years trading fall back to around $11,000 daily.  The Baltic Panamax
index edged down 9 to 520.

CAPESIZE

The rally in the Capesize sector has yet to peak, with rates steady
and fresh inquiry seen every day.  Rates for trips out strengthened
today, with Vale reported to have taken tonnage at $24,000 daily,

trans-Atlantic round saw modern tonnage fix in the low $18,000's
daily.  There was little concluded business from the East, but sources
said rates were holding at or near last dones.  The Baltic Capesize
index jumped 76 to 1864.
