Australian company to build $160m ore terminal in Cameroon

Sydney: Australian iron ore and mining company, Sundance Resources announced this week its projected development of a new $160m export terminal had been given the go-ahead by the Government of Cameroon. The facility is aimed to handle exports from iron ore centres in Cameroon and neighbouring Congo and Gabon. On site facilities for the planned new terminal's high-grade direct shipping ore volumes will include the development of a 22-m deep berth to enable it to handle 250 000 dry-weight-tons ships.
Sundance md Don Lewis said that CamIron SA, its Cameroon subsidiary has been selected as a core operator within the overall multiuser port development. At the same time it is understood that Rio Tinto Alcan will finance, construct and operate an aluminium terminal at the same site. French investment and industrial holding group, Bolloré known for its paper-energy-plantations-logistics activities is reported to be supplying the finance to construct and operate a container terminal, and another French conglomerate, Angelkique/ SCDP will finance, construct and operate a hydrocarbons terminal.
The new deep-water port will be located near the port of Kribi, Lewis announced, adding that Sundance was developing Cameroon's Mbalam iron-ore project, located close to the Belinga iron-ore project in the Republic of Gabon.
The Mbalam and Belinga projects form part of an emerging iron-ore province, which straddled the Cameroon border into the Congo Republic and Gabon.  [15/01/09]
