TNT Dry Freight Review - January 14, 2009
PANAMAX
=======
Atlantic Panamax business is still relying on grain and ore cargoes from east
coast South America for its bread and butter. However, sources are worried that
rates in the Atlantic are too attractive. Owners battered by the very low
numbers in the Pacific may well start ballasting into the Atlantic in large
numbers and flatten a promising recovery. Fronthaul business are currently
seeing rates in the high-$8,000's to $9,000 daily range, while trans-Atlantic
rounds have been done at about $5,000 daily. These numbers already reflect a
slight easing in rates which began yesterday. In the Pacific rates sank again,
with spot backhaul business done between $1,000-$1,200 daily. There remains
some demand for period tonnage and the premium to spot is significant. The
Baltic Panamax index lost 7 today to end at 513.
