TNT Dry Freight Review - 8 April 2009

PANAMAX
=======
Mid-week proved to be a bit of a charm for the Atlantic Panamax
sector, with a flurry of new business on offer and ships fixing
rapidly.  The activity allowed rates to trend sideways early on and
move up a little as the day progressed.  Sources reported that grain
cargoes dominated, but most of the hurry appeared to be due to the
impending holiday weekend.  Sources were not convinced that the gains
seen today would hold up next week.  In the Pacific, demand for
tonnage from the Atlantic has lowered the tonnage count, but despite
this and some fresh inquiry, rates are still weak for China/Australia
rounds in the $7,000 daily range.  The Baltic Panamax index rose 7 to
1114.

CAPESIZE
========
While it was a better day in terms of rates for the Atlantic Capesize
sector, with numbers firming slightly, most sources felt it was a
reaction to the forthcoming long weekend and had little to do with any
improvement in market fundamentals.  That said, owners are unlikely to
quibble.  In the Pacific basins rates trended sideways in slow
trading.  The Baltic Capesize index moved up 21 to 1993 today.
Atlantic Capesize business heard an unconfirmed report that suggested

>From the Atlantic the picture was very quiet and rates appeared to be
falling.   Pacific Handy business took an upswing for Supramaxes today
