Dramatic changes for Maersk in China
Hong Kong: Maersk has changed its China operations in a big way. Beijing is no longer the hq for China operartions in large rationalization plan.
Maersk is introducing three new cluster head offices instead ar Qingdao, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The Danish giant is consolidating its current six areas headquartered in Qingdao, Shanghai, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong into three with head offices in Qingdao, Shanghai and Hong Kong, covering North China, East China and South China in a process that should be completed by next month. Maersk stressed that it did not envisage a large drop in China employees post reorganization.
The three new cluster offices will be under the control of Maersk’s north Asia regional office in Hong Kong after the restructuring. Maersk only recently completed pairing its four regional offices in Asia Pacific into two with Hong Kong looking after north Asia, that include the greater China, Japan, South Korea, and Mongolia; and Singapore overseeing other markets in the Asia Pacific region. This China reorganization follows the news last November that Maersk was shutting a Guangzhou customer service centre with the loss of 700 jobs. Exports from south China have been hardest hit since the onset of the global financial crisis. [12/02/09]
