BHP Billiton has boosted shipments from Port Hedland in Western Australia as it sells all the iron ore it can produce.
Harbour statistics show the miner exported 11.7 million tonnes of iron ore in January, up from 10.6 million the previous month and the most since June.
BHP is on a rate to ship 140 million tonnes, well up on its target of 130 million tonnes.
Fortescue fell to 1.9 million tonnes, from 2.6 million tonnes last month, after maintenance and the death of a worker.
