TNT Dry Freight Review - November 17, 2008

PANAMAX

=======

It was a slow start to the week for the Panamax sector.  Rates saw a small but

steady rise last week and did manage to open at last dones today.  However there

is some concern as to whether this will be sustained.  If fresh inquiry isn't

heard over the next couple of days, we are likely to see rates drop back

rapidly.  There is still an awful lot of tonnage out there looking for cover.

There has been some demand for period tonnage in the Atlantic, although rates

are hardly wonderful.  Business of about 10-12 months trading was said done at

around $14,500 daily.  In the Pacific, the story was much the same, with better

rates but needing a shot in the arm to keep it steady.  The Baltic Panamax index

jumped 46 to 999.

Out of the Atlantic, Cargill has the 1997-built 70,281 dwt Annoula with spot

delivery Portbury for a trip via the U.S. east coast and redelivery in the East

at $11,500 daily.

The 1996-built 70,189 dwt Pleione has reportedly fixed to Bunge with November

24-26 delivery Finland for a trip with 2 laden legs and redelivery in the

Atlantic at $8,000 daily.

Louis Dreyfus agreed $5,000 daily plus a $200,000 ballast bonus for the

1992-built 69,168 dwt Power Loong for November 24-25 delivery San Nicolas and

redelivery Skaw-Cape Passero.

In Atlantic period business, Armada took the 1999-built 73,739 dwt Aeolian

Spirit with November 16-18 delivery Aughinish for a minimum of 10/maximum of 12

months trading, and redelivery worldwide at $14,500 daily.

It emerged that the 2001-built 74,470 dwt Myrto fixed to EDF with December 01-08

The 2001-built 75,121 dwt Archon has gone to Pacific Bulk with November 19-21

delivery Hong Kong for a trip via Fangcheng and redelivery Mississippi River at

$6,500 daily.

BHP Billiton was linked with the 2007-built 92,474 dwt Prigipos for spot

delivery in the Philippines for a trip via Bunbury and redelivery South Africa

at $5,500 daily.

An unnamed charterer took the 1983-built 63,686 dwt Anassa with spot delivery

Goa for a trip with redelivery China at $3,000 daily.

CAPESIZE

========

The Capesize market was unchanged as the week opened.  Rates are still at very

low levels, while the amount of inquiry in the market is poor.  Lloyds List

reported today that almost 25% of the world's capesize fleet is sitting idle.

Estimates of China's iron ore stockpile ranged from 4-8 months worth, not good

news for owners waiting for a resurgence in cargoes.  The Baltic Capesize index

fell 14 to 1002.

In the Atlantic, it emerged that the 2002-built 177,473 dwt Southern Explorer

fixed last week to SK Shipping for November 11-14 delivery Dunkirk for a

trans-Atlantic round with redelivery Skaw-Cape Passero at $3,000 daily.

In Atlantic period business, the 1985-built 172,428 dwt Nightwhisper was said

fixed to Vale with spot delivery Rizhao for 2-4 months trading and redelivery

worldwide at $9,500 daily plus an unnamed ballast bonus.

Union Fenosa has taken a Cargill TBN with January 2009 loading 160,000 tons 10%

coal from Dalrymple to Gijon at $10.25.

HANDY/SUPRAMAX

==============

In the Atlantic, it was a very quiet day with little reported fixed.  Sources

said that some tonnage has gone from the market, mostly those vessels with short

chains or direct from owner.  Rates are still depressed and it appears unlikely

this will change very soon.  Pacific Handy business saw some small improvement

last week, and opened this week at last dones.  There were words of cautious

optimism today as activity levels in the Indian Ocean picked up where they left

off last week and rumours circulated of better rates.  The Baltic Supramax index

gained 15 to 571, while the Handysize index inched up 3 to 300.

Atlantic business heard that the 1984-built 41,515 dwt Jag Rani fixed to Hamburg

Bulk Carriers with prompt delivery Vila do Conde for a trip with redelivery

Norway at about $8,000 daily.

November 15-25 delivery Santos for a trip with redelivery in the Far East at

$8,000 daily.

The charterer also has the 2001-built 50,777 dwt Jin Li with November 17-24

delivery Owendo for a trip with redelivery Sauda, Norway at $6,000 daily.

Pierre 1996 55000/10 coal Riga/Tilbury chop Portbury 16/21 Nov $7.00 fio

12000sc/17000s or 25000sc - Mirtrade
