TNT Dry Freight Review - November 05, 2008
PANAMAX
=======
A very slow day for the Atlantic Panamax market today, but rates appeared to
have settled and numbers seen today were in line with yesterday's, rather than
down which has so often been the case in recent weeks. A north Africa/Far East
run via ECSA was done at $12,000 daily, and short period business of 4-6 months
earned $9,500 daily for modern tonnage. For the Pacific basin, sources reported
some resistance developing among owners in the East who with their backs to the
wall have simply started saying no to below-breakeven numbers. That said, no
real turnaround occurred and business as reported were still done at low rates.
The Baltic Panamax index registered a gain of 93 today to reach 772.

CAPESIZE
========
The Capesize market was starkly described with one word - "desperate". There was
very little business heard done. Word circulated that the 1995-built 161,425
dwt Martzoukos A fixed and failed to Constellation with November 10-20 loading
150,000 tons 10% ore from Ubu to Fos at $5.70. The Baltic Exchange also

rumours of vessels being scrapped, with Hosco reported to have sold the
1982-built 137,074 dwt Hebei Pioneer to Bangladesh for scrap at $240 /ldt.
Hosco was also linked with 2 other scraps, but details failed to emerge. In a
move to stave off future negative earnings under the current economic shake-up,
CNNMoney.com reported today that Genco Shipping is cancelling plans to take
delivery of six new ships. The company saw its share price jump 12.7% as a
result, but will forfeit $53 million in deposits. Lloyds List reported today
that Golden Ocean is also mulling cancelling some of its newbuilding orders, six
of which had been scheduled for resale to the now bankrupt Britannia Bulk.
However, Golden Ocean's chief financial officer, Geir Karlsen, said no
decisions had yet been taken. The Baltic Capesize index was down 26 today at
1185.
Concluded business heard that the 2006-built 174,231 dwt CHS Creation fixed with
Cargill for November 10-15 delivery aps Tubarao for a trans-Atlantic round
voyage with redelivery in the US Gulf at $3,500 daily plus a ballast bonus of
$240,000.
HANDY/SUPRAMAX
==============
It was not a very active Atlantic market for Handy's today, but sources said a
number of vessels have gone although details remained private. Longer period
business was noted done, which may signal that owners no longer expect the
market to revive anytime soon and are taking what they can get. 1-plus-1-years
option was said done at $12,000 daily. While there were more signs of activity
from the Pacific basin today, most of the rates were low. There was renewed
interest in period tonnage; while reports of voyage business were dominated by
Taipower which took at least 10 ships for coal cargoes in the east. The Baltic
Supramax index was down 19 today at 512, while the Handysize index fell 10 to
