Panamax business seemed a tad quieter today but rates appeared to be holding at last dones. In the Atlantic, Continent to the East businTNT Dry Freight Review - February 05, 2009ess saw a 1989-built vessel earn a respectable $13,500 daily, while over-aged tonnage fixed a trip Med-Black Sea/China at $10,800 daily. In the Pacific, a NoPac round saw and LME fix at $8,000 daily, while from the Indian Ocean a 1988-built vessel received $9,000 daily for a trip via ECSA and back to the Far East. Demand for period tonnage was active, with short periods of 4-6 months trading settled in the $12,000-$12,750 daily range. The Baltic Panamax index soared 128 to reach 1128 today.
In the Atlantic, STX Pan Ocean was said to be the charterer of the 1989-built
68,722 dwt Greta R with mid-February delivery Liverpool for a trip with redelivery in the East at $13,500 daily.
Perseveranza was linked with the 1998-built 74,073 dwt Bahia Blanca with February 10-20 delivery Skaw-Cape Passero for a trip with 2 laden legs in the Atlantic and redelivery Skaw-Cape Passero at $13,000 daily.
The 1981-built 65,015 dwt Akroneos went to Richstone with February 11-16 delivery Piraeus for a trip via the Black Sea and redelivery China at $10,800 daily.
Oldendorff reportedly fixed the 1999-built 74,002 dwt Ernst Salamon with February 12-15 delivery Skaw for a trip via Riga with redelivery UK-Continent at $10,000 daily - the ship will be breaking IWL.
The charterer agreed the same rate for the 1997-built 69,163 dwt YM Cultivation with mid-February delivery Skaw-Cape Passero for a trip via Ventspils and redelivery on the Continent.
The 1997-built 73,242 dwt Great Bright was said fixed to D'Amico with February 16-20 delivery Richards Bay for a trip with redelivery Skaw-Cape Passero at $8,000 daily plus a ballast bonus of $150,000.
PCL agreed $7,500 daily for the 2001-built 75,321 dwt Nordweser with February 06-10 delivery Genoa for a trip via Kamsar and redelivery Fos.
The 1999-built Taskent fixed to an undisclosed charterer with February 20-28 loading 70,000 tons 10% ore from Brazil to China at $20.50.
The 2005-built 76,806 dwt Alessandro Volta reportedly fixed and failed with CTP for March 10-25 delivery Cape Passero for 12 months trading and redelivery worldwide at about $16750 daily.
For Pacific Panamax business, Oldendorff was linked with the 2005-built 76,886 dwt Torm Charlotte for February 12-14 delivery Jianyin for a trip via east coast Australia and redelivery India at $9,000 daily.
The 1988-built 69,344 dwt C. Young has gone to an unnamed charterer with spot delivery Paradip for a trip via east coast South America and redelivery Singapore-Japan at $9,000 daily.
The 2001-built 74,764 dwt Pioneer Navigation-relet Angelic Grace fixed to Eitzen Bulk Carriers with spot delivery South Korea for a trip via NoPac with redelivery Singapore-Japan at about $8,500 daily.
The 2005-built 75,397 dwt Navios Aurora I has fixed to Cargill with February
11-13 delivery Qingdao for a trip via NoPac and redelivery Singapore-Japan at $8,000 daily.
Brownstone has taken the 1984-built 77,078 dwt Apostolos D with February 04-10 delivery Singapore for a trip via east coast India and redelivery China at $7,000 daily.
It emerged that Great Pacific recently fixed the 2004-built 76,606 dwt Red Lily with February 05-08 delivery Hong Kong for a trip via Indonesia and redelivery India at $5,500 daily,
An undisclosed charterer has reportedly fixed the 1998-built 73,937 dwt Halo Cygnus with February 10-14 delivery Ningbo for a trip with redelivery in the Atlantic at about $3,250 daily.
In Pacific period business, an unnamed charterer has fixed on subjects the 1996-built 72,870 dwt Global Triumph with mid-February delivery Shekou for 4-6 months trading and redelivery worldwide at about $12,750 daily.
The 2006-built 77,326 dwt Apollo has gone to Oldendorff with February 14-16 delivery Taiwan for 4-6 months trading and redelivery worldwide at $12,500 daily.
Cargill proved to be the charterer of the 2000-built 74,200 dwt Tian Zhu Feng with prompt delivery Lanshan for a minimum of 4-to a-maximum of 6 months trading with redelivery worldwide at $12,000 daily.
An unnamed charterer fixed the 1998-built 74,744 dwt Samjohn Amity with February
20-24 delivery Qingdao for 3-5 months trading and redelivery worldwide at $10,000 daily.
The 1995-built 71,252 dwt Maratha Messenger fixed short period business of 3-4 months trading with Swiss Marine for March 07-09 delivery Xingang and redelivery worldwide at $8,700 daily.
CAPESIZE

It was another solid day of trading for the Capesize sector, with sources reporting the influx of fresh inquiry as fast and furious. Atlantic business saw voyage rates from West Africa to the Continent firm again to the mid-$9.00 range and higher. From east coast South America to the Far East talk was that rates have been done at $22.50-$23.50, although details have yet to emerge.
In the Pacific, Chinese steel mills were back in the market for ore cargoes from West Australia and pushing rates on this route up very quickly. Demand for period tonnage continued, with rates for about 1-years trading in the mid-$20,000's daily for modern tonnage. Even old tonnage did well, with a 1989-built vessel earning $22,500 daily for 12-14 months. The Baltic Capesize index rocketed up 354 today to 2734.
From the Atlantic, Sinom was said to have taken the 1993-built Cape Falcon with February 20-March 05 loading 150,000 tons 10% ore from Itaquai to Qingdao at $20.00.
An RWE TBN has fixed to Cargill with March 05-19 loading 160,000 tons 10% ore from Richards Bay to Rotterdam at $9.85.
Out of the Pacific, BHP Billiton was linked with the 2005-built Cosco HK-relet Anangel Sailor with February 12-20 loading 170000 tons 10% ore from Port Hedland to Qingdao at $7.50.
In Pacific period business, the 2000-built 170,454 dwt Cape Eregli reportedly fixed to TMT with April 2009 delivery in the Far East for 11-13 months trading and redelivery worldwide at $26,000 daily.
An unnamed charterer was said to have taken the 1989-built 149,528 dwt Keros Warrior with March-April 2009 delivery in the Far East for 12-14 months trading and redelivery worldwide at $22,500 daily.

There was a definite uptick in the Atlantic Handy market, with sources reporting trans-Atlantic runs now in the high-teen's. Scrap cargoes were said up from the Continent and Black Sea regions, and grain cargoes from east coast South America are reportedly seeing better numbers too. Still a tougher market in the Pacific, but rates here seemed to be steady. Period tonnage is still said to be in demand, with modern tonnage reportedly seeing rates in the $8,000 daily range for redelivery in the East and high-$7,000's daily if Atlantic - but once again details were lacking. The Baltic Supramax index made a significant move up of
102 to 783, while the Handysize index rose 26 to 379.
Atlantic Handy business included reports that Clipper fixed the 2003-built
53,553 dwt Ikan Salmon with early-February delivery dop New York for a trip with redelivery Singapore-Japan range at $16,000 daily.
ED&F Man Shipping were the charterer of the 1997-built 46,790 dwt Gang Qiang with February 07-12 delivery east coast Mexico for a trip with redelivery Skaw-Mediterranean at $12,000 daily.
The 2004-built 48,821 dwt Dimitris S has reportedly fixed to Glencore with February 01-05 delivery Piraeus for a trip via the Black Sea and redelivery Singapore-Japan range at $11,500 daily.
Suisse Atlantique was linked with the 2008-built 28,358 dwt Helga for spot/prompt delivery Douala for a trip with two laden legs in the Atlantic at $7,000 daily.
An undisclosed charterer has the 1984-built 37,694 dwt Springwood with spot delivery Gibraltar for a trip via east coast South America and redelivery UK/Continent range at $6,850 daily.
The 1995-built 26,435 dwt Lake Aru has gone to an unnamed charterer with spot delivery Pointe Noire for a trip via east coast South America and redelivery Poland at $5,500 daily.
The 1995-built 27,374 dwt Ocean Honey fixed to Armada Switzerland with mid-February delivery delivery Wilmington for a trip via the US Gulf and redelivery USG/NCSA range at just $2,800 daily.
In Atlantic period business, Western Bulk Carriers was in the market, taking the 1993-built 43,415 dwt Pacific Career with February 12-18 delivery Antwerp in d/c for 12 months trading and redelivery worldwide at $8,000 daily.
Voyage business saw Noble take a TBN with end-February loading 20,000 tons 10% maize from Nueva Palmira to Tripoli at $27.00.
Out of the Pacific, the 2008-built 55,688 dwt Poseidon SW has fixed to an undisclosed charterer with spot delivery Porbandar for a trip with redelivery China at $11,000 daily .
STX Pan Ocean was the charterer of the 2003-built 52,174 dwt Marylisa V with February 01-05 delivery dop Pakistan for a trip via west coast India and redelivery China at $11,500 daily.
Pacbasin agreed $3,000 daily plus a ballast bonus of $80,000 for the 1999-built
47,201 dwt Yang Hai with February 12-17 delivery aps west Australia for a trip with redelivery in the Atlantic.
It emerged that the 1992-built 27,293 dwt Baltic Frontier recently fixed to an unnamed charterer with February 13-15 delivery Surabaya for a trip via Australia and redelivery in the Far East at $5,000 daily.
