TNT Dry Freight Review - December 08, 2008
PANAMAX
=======
Atlantic Panamax business got off to what is now the depressing reality - lower
rates and indices, with very little fresh business on offer. While business
reported today included a trip out at $6,600 daily, other business was done at
$6,000 daily and a trip to ARA at $5,900 daily. None of which leads to any hope
of a turn-around. From the Pacific, another "same old story" - with too many
ships and too few cargoes. Rates remained low, even for period business which
traditionally sees a premium over spot tonnage. The Baltic Panamax index
dropped 23 today to 481.

with December 10-12 delivery Lattakia for 1-year's trading and redelivery
worldwide at $10,000 daily.
CAPESIZE
========
There was a sense of optimism in the Capesize sector today - a feeling which has
been missing over the last few weeks. Although the changes have not been major,
3 days of gains in the BCI and slight improvements in rates was enough to have
people suggesting that the market might finally be ready to start moving back to
a more reasonable picture. Last week started the ball rolling, with more
cargoes entering the market and more fixtures being done. This weeks picture
looks to be more of the same, with slight but steady gains and more cargoes on
offer from Brazil, China and Australia. If owners keep laying up vessels, that
too will help bring some balance back into the market. In the Pacific basin,
rates firmed a little for voyage business. The Baltic Capesize index jumped 67
today to 938.
In voyage business, VSP was said to have taken a Noble TBN with January 15-25
loading 75,000 tons 10% coal from Newport News to Vizakhapatnam at $16.00.
Kleimar was linked with the 2002-built Mishima for spot loading 70,000 tons 10%
coal from Colombia to the Continent at $7.00.
The 1999-built Great Ambition has fixed to BCM with December 20-29 loading
70,000 tons 10% coal from Drummond to ARA at $6.25.
Pacific Capesize business heard that the 2006-built Cosco HK-relet CHS
Magnificence has fixed to BHP Billiton with December 10-20 loading 160,000 tons
10% ore from Port Hedland to Qingdao at $4.35.
The charterer also has the 2003-built Cape Saturn for December 15-25 loading
160,000 tons 10% ore from Port Hedland to Qingdao at $3.85.
An NYK TBN was reported fixed to Kepco with December 14-18 loading 140,000 tons
10% coal from Gladstone to Yonghung at $4.55.
HANDY/SUPRAMAX
==============
Atlantic Handy business remained a very tough market for the larger sizes.
There were said to be very few opportunities for business and rates under
pressure. This sounds odd when comparing it to rates on offer for Capesizes,
which are seeing lower numbers than those on offer in the Handy sector! In the
Atlantic, a spot modern vessel managed a steady $9,000 daily for a
trans-Atlantic run. Period business was an older handysize earn $5,000 daily
for 4-6 months trading - positively generous in this market! For the Pacific,
Indian Ocean business has yet to drop significantly. It emerged that a supermax
managed $13,000 daily for an India/China run. The Baltic Supramax index was
down 15 at 533, while the Handysize index inched down 1 to 299.
In the Atlantic, the 2006-built 37,534 dwt Maria Oldendorff reportedly went to
Lauritzen with spot delivery in the US Gulf for a trip with redelivery
UK-Continent at a steady $9,000 daily.
Eitzen Bulk Carriers were linked with the 2008-built 53,800 dwt Davakis G with
December 10-20 delivery aps north coast South America for a trip with redelivery
in the US Gulf/US Atlantic coast region at $8,000 daily.
For Atlantic period business, the 1985-built 26,536 dwt Explorius has fixed to
an unnamed charterer with spot delivery Tema for 4-6 months trading and
redelivery in the Atlantic at $5,000 daily.
In the Pacific, the 2004-built 52,491 dwt Prabhu Lal has fixed to an undisclosed
charterer with December 12-14 delivery Haldia for a trip with redelivery China
at $13,000 daily.
The 2003-built 55,522 dwt Navios Kypros fixed to an unnamed charterer with
December 15-17 delivery Visakhaptnam for a trip with redelivery China at $10,000
daily.
The charterer of the 2004-built 55,718 dwt Frieda Selmer remained unnamed,
taking the vessel with spot delivery Kakinada for a trip via east coast India
and redelivery China at $9,000 daily.
