TNT Dry Freight Review - March 11, 2009
PANAMAX
=======
Atlantic Panamax business continued to see gains today as a lack of tonnage from
the Continent helped push rates higher, South American business while having
only limited access to tonnage in the region, has not seen huge rate gains due
to access to tonnage from the East. In the Pacific, a NoPac round will see
rates in the mid-$16,000s daily range, while backhaul business moved up, but
remains under $10,000 daily. Paper trades continued to hamper interest in
period fixtures as the market remains in the doldrums. The Baltic Panamax index
fell 16 to 2401.
Atlantic Panamax business included reports that Cargill fixed the 2007-built
78,932 dwt Orange Trident with March 13-15 delivery Cape Passero for a trip via

CAPESIZE
========
Capesize business remained very quiet today with rates still under pressure,
despite the recent influx of ore cargoes on the Brazil/China run, or
W.Australia/China in the East. In the Atlantic, Brazil/China business is now
said to be earning $20.50 or less. In the Pacific, West Australia/China ore
cargoes which strengthened to around $8.00 last week have since dropped back
$7.50, and today came word of business done between $7.00-$7.45. Demand for
period fixtures remained in abeyance as paper trades were off again. The Baltic
Capesize index dropped 101 today to end at 2706.
From the Atlantic, the 1995-built Classic Maritime-relet Brisbane fixed to
Pacific Bulk in a swap deal for April 05-15 loading 150,000 tons 10% ore from
Itaquai to Qingdao at $22.50.
Classic Maritime agreed an above-the-market $8.00, in a swap deal with Pacific
Bulk, for the 2005-built Pacific Bulk-relet Mineral Monaco for March 20-30
loading 170,000 tons 10% ore from Dampier to Qingdao at $8.00 - but the
charterer was said to be in need of an early ship.
Noble took the 1981-built Eternal Bright with March 15-25 loading 130,000 tons
10% ore from Goa to Qingdao at $9.00.
HANDY/SUPRAMAX
==============
The Atlantic Handy market remained strong at mid-week, with sources pointing to
the surge in grain cargoes from South America which has mopped up tonnage in the
Atlantic and encouraged vessels to ballast in from the Persian Gulf and Far
East. There have been reports of Supramax tonnage fixing Black Sea/East at
$40,000 daily, but details have yet to emerge. West Africa/East via ECSA are
reportedly in the high-$20,000s daily range, but again details were lacking.
Modern tonnage on business from Turkey via the Black Sea with redelivery in the
Far East has been reported done at a firm $31,500 daily. From the Continent and
Black Sea there has been an ongoing surge in cargoes of both scrap and grain,
which when combined with the limited tonnage in the area has pushed rates to
firmer levels. In the East most rates are still discounted compared to those in
the Atlantic. Backhaul business earns relatively low numbers as owners appear
willing to concede to get their vessels to a better position. A 50,000-tonner
has reportedly fixed Far East/USG business with early dates at about $5,000
daily. Demand for ore cargoes Australia/China which were numerous last week
appear to have slowed down, with modern tonnage earning about $10,000 daily for
an Australia/Far East run. Period business was limited, with periods of about
1-years trading earning around $12,000 daily. The Baltic Supramax index moved
up 7 to 1735, while the Handysize index gained 20 to 775.
Out of the Atlantic, an unnamed charterer has fixed the 1997-built 45,736 dwt
Aeolos with March 15-17 delivery Canakkale for a trip via the Black Sea with
redelivery in the Far East at $31,500 daily.
Navision proved to be the charterer of the 2001-built 52,224 dwt Koriana with
March 13-14 delivery in the US Gulf for a trip via west coast Central America
and redelivery Cristobal at $23,500 daily - the business was earlier reported
done at $23,000 daily.
For Pacific business, an unnamed charterer took the 1997-built 47,271 dwt Dubai
Guardian with March 18-20 delivery Kandla for a trip with redelivery China at
$15,000 daily.
The 2000-built 48,893 dwt Aurora Sapphire was said fixed on subjects with an
undisclosed charterer for March 14-16 delivery Kinuura for a trip via NoPac and
redelivery India at $13,750 daily.

daily.
