Pacific panamax rates set to surge to ‘dizzying heights’

PACIFIC panamax owners revelled in an “incredible” week after charter rates surged to higher and higher levels on the back of a flurry of coal fixtures from Australia and Indonesia, writes Keith Wallis in Hong Kong.
“It’s really been an incredible week — there is no stopping the Pacific panamax sector,” said a Hong Kong-based broker who preferred to remain nameless.
He thought north Pacific round trip rates would push past $35,000 per day by the end of this week, while backhaul rates from the Far East to the European continent would nudge $19,000 per day.
“The Atlantic basin is strengthening which is giving support for backhaul charter rates,” he said.
The broker added: “I doubt backhaul rates will hit $20,000 per day this week, but it’s a strong possibility for next week.”
A Shanghai-based broker agreed and pointed out: “It’s been a storming week. Owners are having it all their own way. Charterers have no option but to accept owners’ rate levels.”
He added: “There is nothing on the horizon to slow what appears to be an inexorable rise to further dizzying heights in panamax rates. If anything, continuing bad weather in eastern and northern China will worsen congestion and make the availability of Pacific panamax tonnage even tighter.”
The broker added that with capesize charter rates also soaring to higher levels charterers would soon start splitting capesize cargoes into two panamax stems.
“That will put pressure on what are already sizzling panamax rates,” he said.
This came as rates for a north Pacific voyage topped $32,950 per day yesterday, up more than $5,000 on the week, while daily backhaul rates were up to $17,700, the highest levels since the financial crash last September, according to data from the Baltic Exchange.
The Shanghai broker said Australia’s BHP Billiton was particularly active along with Taiwan’s China Steel Express after fixing a raft of coal cargoes.
The BHP fixtures included the 2001-built, 74,401 dwt Amira which was taken on a voyage from eastern Australia to China at $29,500 per day and the younger and larger 2004-built, 76,629 dwt Maribella for a similar voyage at $32,500 per day.
The China Steel Express charters included the 2002-built, 74,374 dwt Alpha Melody which was fixed for a coal cargo from eastern Australia to Taiwan at $31,500 per day.
The steelmaker paid a higher rate of $34,000 per day to fix the 82,000 dwt newbuilding F D Isabella for a similar eastern Australia to Taiwan voyage.
Brokers said soaring spot rates had put more life back into the period market.
“There is a lot of interest from charterers for one and two year deals, but owners are being more circumspect and while there is some interest in 11-13 month charterers most owners continue to favour short periods,” said the Hong Kong-based broker.
He added that rates for a four to six month charter with Pacific delivery are at similar levels to spot rates at around $33,000-$34,000 per day.
“Locking in a six month charter at these levels gives owners earnings visibility if the market sours early in the new year,” the broker said.

Rates set to break $100,000 barrier
CONTINUED steady demand for iron ore and coal cargoes is set to push daily capesize freight rates past the $100,000 level this week on the largest shipping route, from Brazil to China, writes Michelle Wiese Bockmann.
Brokers said major iron ore producers in Australia continued to book capesize bulk carriers on the spot market, while increased volumes of coal shipped from South Africa to Europe also soaked up scarce tonnage.
Voyage rates to transport coal on capesize bulk carriers from the South African port of Richards Bay to Rotterdam hit $22.50 per tonne, matching levels seen briefly during the last market surge in June. Transatlantic round voyages hit $81,869 per day, while the fronthaul rate was at $98,231.
“Whichever way you turn, it all seems to be pretty positive at the moment,” said a London-based broker.
Underpinned by Chinese steelmakers’ demand for imported iron ore, average capesize rates have gained nearly $16,000 per day over the last week, and more than tripled in the last seven weeks, closing at nearly $77,000 per day on Friday.
“There’s no end to demand coming from Western Australia to China [shipping route] which has really driven the market,” said a broker.
“We’ve seen all the major iron ore producers such as BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Fortescue active, and they don’t seem to be stopping at the moment. Even today [Friday] Rio Tinto is still active, and although BHP Billiton has quietened down a bit, they’re still sniffing around.”
BHP Billiton has booked nine capesizes this month, and Rio Tinto seven, according to the Baltic Exchange fixture list.
But coupled with surging transatlantic trades, few vessels in the 930-strong fleet of capesizes are immediately available for charter, lifting prices paid on the spot market.
“There is no immediate sign of slowdown in this market,” said a Europe-based shipping analyst.
The paper market was also buoying the spot market,with contract values for the first quarter of 2010 prompting interest for charters for periods of five to seven months’ duration.
Deals were priced at between $57,500 per day and $60,000 per day, with growing interest in chartering for longer periods of up to a year. First-quarter capesize derivatives contracts were trading as high as $47,500 per day on Friday, jumping 27% over the last week.
The bull run comes despite a deteriorating supply backdrop, with more 750 capesizes ordered at Asian shipyards, including 573m dwt scheduled for delivery in 2010.
Although bulk commodities trades are expected grow as Asian steel production recovers further, the surge in new ships is expected to outstrip demand and depress rates.
Iron ore trades are forecast to grow 11% to 988m tonnes in 2010, according to London broker Clarksons, while metallurgical coal imports will rise 6% to 219m tonnes and thermal coal 3% to 588m.
“We think this run is going to continue into [this] week, it’s a bit hard to read it beyond there,” said another broker.
Once major iron ore producers and speculators retreated from the underlying physical market, FFA profit-takers might influence rates to tip downwards, he said.

Booming grain trade boosts panamax rates
BROKERS forecast rates for panamax bulk carriers trading in the Pacific region to build on last week’s steady increase, writes Keith Wallis in Hong Kong .
“It is stable to firm,” one Singapore-based broker told Lloyd’s List, describing the Pacific panamax sector. He added that the Pacific market reflected what was happening in the Atlantic basin. “The whole panamax market is up,” he said.
A Shanghai-based broker, who also preferred to remain nameless, said the booming US grain trade had encouraged owners with tonnage in the Pacific to ballast into the Atlantic. But the Singapore broker said the Indian iron ore trade was also strengthening.
A Hong Kong broker agreed and thought this could create the potential for a return to the surge in rates seen two weeks ago.
“Tonnage could get a lot tighter in the next week or two. Very prompt tonnage in the Pacific is already commanding a premium over spot rates and there is scope for significant rates rises this week,” the broker said. He explained that Pacific spot rates were topping $23,800 per day on Monday, but several charters concluded at the end of last week had exceeded this level.
Cosco Qingdao fixed the 1999-built, 72,844 dwt Alpha Effort for a coal cargo from Indonesia to southern China at $24,250 per day. Bocimar took the 2006-built, 75,397 dwt Medi Singapore for a spot charter also with coal from eastern Australia to Taiwan at $23,000 per day.
All three charterers were concluded for loading this week, brokers said.
The Shanghai broker added: “It would not take too much more activity for rates to really catch alight, especially with what is happening in the capesize market, which is already strong.”
The Singapore broker said that while the gains in the capesize sector were not having an immediate effect on Pacific panamax rates, he believed it could only be a question of time if the surge continued.
“Undoubtedly, Pacific panamax rates will rise on the coat tails of the capesize sector the longer the rally in that market goes on,” the broker said.
The gains in the panamax spot market, with north Pacific rates rising by around $800 over the course of last week, spurred further interest in period business.
Geneva-based Windrose took the 2009-built, 92,000 dwt Andreas K for 12-14 months at $20,500 per day. Brokers said the rate was a premium on similar year-long charters concluded a week earlier, but this reflected the premium size of the vessel.
