TNT Dry Freight Review - 15 December 2008


PANAMAX
=======
Panamax business saw a typically quiet Monday, but sources said there
was just enough fresh inquiry to give a hopeful tone to the market.
In the Atlantic, rates were said to be a little firmer,  but details
for most business remained private.  Pacific business saw a trip back
to Italy via NoPac, fixed an LME at $3,000 daily, while Far East round
business made a steady $5,500 daily.  Period business of about 1-years
trading made $12,000 daily.  The Baltic Panamax index edged up 10 to
450.
Out of the Atlantic, the 2000-built 75,122 dwt Marina went to Grand
China Shipping with prompt delivery Vado ppt trip via Black Sea
redelivery Singapore-Japan rge approx $7100 daily - Grand China

Pacific Panamax business included reports that the 2001-built 74,000
dwt Georgios S has gone to Deiulemar with spot delivery Nantong for a
trip via NoPac and redelivery Italy at $3,000 daily.
The 1998-built 72,928 dwt Tiara Globe reportedly fixed to an
undisclosed charterer with December 18-21 delivery CJK for a trip via
Indonesia and redelivery China at $5,500 daily.
In voyage business, the 1983-built Navdhenu Trust 1983 70000/10 ore
Goa/China spot $7.95 fio 15000sc/12000sc - cnr
In period business, Swiss Marine has reportedly fixed on subjects the
2006-built 82,849 dwt Yasa Fortune with end-December delivery China
for 12-months trading and redelivery worldwide at $12,000 daily.
The charterer also has the 2006-built 76,585 dwt Eternal Grace with
December 24-26 delivery Boryoung (South Korea) for 1-year's trading
and redelivery worldwide at $10,800 daily.
CAPESIZE
========
Another good day for Capesize owners, with rates still firming and
fresh inquiry noted in the Pacific.  From the Atlantic, a trip out
from the Continent via ECSA will still see about $10,600 daily.  Rates
in the Pacific are still being supported by Chinese demand for ore
cargoes from Australia.  Rates are said to have broached $6.00, but
details failed to emerge.  There was said to be period business of
about 1-year done at stronger numbers, but again details were scarce.
The Baltic Capesize index jumped another 123 to reach 1454 today.
In the Atlantic, China Steel Express was linked with the 1993-built
161,545 dwt Armada-relet Anangel Solidarity with prompt delivery Gijon
for a trip via Ponta Da Madeira and redelivery Kaohsiung at $10,000
daily.
The 1982-built Tinos Warrior fixed to Kumba with
end-December/early-January loading 160,000 tons 10% ore from Saldanha
Bay to Caofeidian at $7.30.
>From the Pacific, Rio Tinto took the 1994-built Noble-relet Huikanghai
late last week with December 27-January 05 loading 150,000 tons 10%
ore from Dampier to Qingdao at $5.10.
BHP Billiton was very active last week, taking several vessels, among
them a TBN with January 01-10 loading 150,000 tons 10% ore from Port
Hedland to Qingdao at $5.85.
The charterer also fixed a Cosco Hong Kong TBN with December 20-30
loading 150,000 tons 10% ore from Port Hedland to Qingdao at $5.75.
Again from last week, a Bao Steel TBN was reported fixed to BHP
Billiton with December 20-30 loading 150,000 tons 10% ore from Port
Hedland to Qingdao at $5.65.

There was very little concluded business reported from the Atlantic.
Sources said that while there was some activity, charterer and owners
held details private as rates are still poor.  Pacific business was
not much changed either.  Rates are still at very low numbers, despite
rumours of firmer rates having been paid.  The Baltic Supramax index
lost 4 to 486, while the Handysize index inched up 1 at 304.
In the Atlantic, the 1980-built 23,934 dwt Matellini was reported
fixed to an unnamed charterer with prompt delivery Recalada for a trip
with redelivery in the Mediterranean at $2,750 daily.
In voyage business, the 2001-built SA Fortius went to Cargill with
January 17-26 loading 150,000 tons 10% coal from Richards Bay to
Rotterdam at $6.35.
>From the Pacific, Seawin has the 2004-built 55,604 dwt Placid Sea with
December 17-20 delivery Dandong for a trip via north China and
redelivery India at $3,000 daily.
