Baltic Index Collapsing?
I believe many of my readers especially those in the industry are seeing a slide off never before experienced in current times. From a high of 11,000 to the Baltic Dry Index trying to hang on to 2200.
Obviously the bigger picture of economic crisis is the big picture, yet the speed of the decline is extremely disturbing to say the least. The last time the Baltic was at this levels, Oil was not at USD 80 per barrel.
The underlying meaning is that lesser demand due to less trading is taking place across the world. if you are in the industry, you can already see the tons of vessels spot open in the market. Just a few months back, it was impossible to get a good vessel unless you are willing to pay top dollar, now the reverse is true, most cargoes as long as firm are likely to be fix quickly and snapped up by increasing desperate owners.
Shipping has often being labeled a barometer of a nation's growth. This is definitely true as there is lesser exports or imports which means goods and commonalities are in less demand.
Now the one big real fear is that the Baltic is getting squeeze even further is that Traders are increasing finding it tougher to trade commodities and goods because of the increasing reluctance by banks to issue Letters of Credit. Of course, if they decide not to honor existing letters of credit, then all hell breaks loose.
First, let us go back to how a trader trades commodities (goods)
a) He/she finds say grain from US and agrees to purchase X amount
b) The trader will then find a suitable buyer located in another part of the world who agrees to buy this same grain at X+Y price (Y being the profit margin for the Trader)
c) The trader will then sign the contract with the buyer of the cargo in US and the buyers will arrange with his/her banks to issue letters of credit agreeing to pay X+Y amount to the trader when such cargo is stowed on board a vessel.
d) The trader also then sign the contract with the seller of the cargo in US and arrange with banks letters of credit agreeing to pay X amount when such cargo is stowed on board a vessel.
e) Banks will require certain documents such as Bills of Lading (issued when cargo is loaded onto vessels), Quality certificates and invoices etc and allow the Seller to bank in the Letter of Credit to obtain cash.
Now the scary part is that either the actual buyer of the grain cargo or the trader himself is having problems obtaining credit in the market. The trade will not go through then.
Even scarier will be the notion that all parties can obtain letters of credit but the banks themselves are finding excuses or reason to NOT HONOR such.
Although there is so far no actual example of such happening, it is not exactly out the equation given the current economic climate. Nobody will now honor any letters of credit from any Icelandic banks now will they?

IT IS A FACT THAT BANKS ARE VERY RELUCTANT TO ISSUE ANY LETTERS OF CREDIT NOW. SO THERE YOU GO, IT IS A VERY VERY BAD TIME TO BE DOING BUSINESS.

CHARTERERS emerged from the woodwork yesterday to profit from the latest drop in dry bulk freight rates; but brokers gained some confidence from a couple of confirmed period fixtures, writes Jamie Dale.
A London broker told Lloyd’s List that handymax and supramax rates were still dropping by around 10% each day.
However, after a day of fixing that has cleared out some of the prompt vessels, the broker expects a quieter week next week, with the decline possibly slowing down.
“Although rates are dropping, there has been more fixing today. There were even two period deals, so charterers probably see levels near to a logical bottom — just a bit over operating costs,” the broker said.
The broker said that two period fixtures that were reported yesterday had given the market some positive news to mull over.
The Baltic Exchange reported that PCL had fixed the 53,990 dwt, 2007-built Madonna III for delivery Ravenna on October 15-17 for six to seven months, trading at $17,500 per day.
Meanwhile, Hanjin fixed the 52,036 dwt, 2001-built Bianco Bulker with delivery Japan in October for 11-13 months, trading at $25,500 per day. “That is a very bullish number, considering the market,” the London broker said.
The broker said that firm offers from charterers had emerged for steel or grain cargoes to the Middle East Gulf.
He added that rates for supramaxes from East Mediterranean/Black Sea to the Middle East Gulf were around $20,000 per day, while handymax daily hire rates were in the high teens.
At the start of the week, supramax rates for an East Mediterranean/Black Sea to Middle East Gulf trip were around the mid $20,000 per day mark.
But brokers at ICAP Shipping were still scratching their heads, adding that: “We continue to wonder where it will all end.”
Interest in the US Gulf has lost its allure, ICAP Shipping said in its daily report. Supramax fixtures were rumoured to be in the mid $20,000s per day for a trip to the Continent.
The London brokerage noted reports of grain cargoes piling up in US ports because buyers were no longer able to secure credit, and this situation seems unlikely to improve.
In the Pacific, Fearnleys said that iron ore cargoes were still not emerging from India. The Norwegian brokerage said in its mid-week report that: “Some of the Indian iron ore traders have stems, but they are giving ideas of $10.00 per tonne, and owners are presently not willing to agree these levels.”
ICAP Shipping said that all sectors were still “sliding”, but some more than others. There are some new spot loads in the Indian Ocean, and North Pacific round voyage rates were softening but nevertheless were still holding in the high teens, ICAP Shipping said.
“The short period market is very quiet today, which is not surprising, considering the large gap between spot and period rates,” the London brokerage added.

PANAMAX

The Atlantic Panamax got off to a slow start today, with little
concluded business emerging for the sector. Rates in some areas
appeared to have steadied, but some business has been done at very low
numbers. The over-aged Eleftheria was heard done for a trans-Atlantic
round at $8,500 daily. There were new reports of conflicts between
Brazilian farmers and the government, with no indication yet on how
this may further impact the market. In the Pacific, there were better
numbers heard done, although a lot of fixing and failing has been
occurring. The Baltic Panamax index gained 44 to 2325.
Out of the Atlantic, the 1999-buit 71,161 dwt Go Public has gone to
Cargill with September 22 delivery retro-Swinoujscie for a trip via
Tampa and redelivery India at $19,000 daily plus an equivalent ballast
bonus.
The 1999-built 74,002 dwt Ernst Salamon was said fixed to Transbulk
with October 05 delivery Immingham for a trip via Aaheim and
redelivery Taranto at $18,000 daily.
Louis Dreyfus agreed $16,000 daily late last week for the 2007-built
76,500 dwt Golden Kiji with October 04-10 delivery Portbury for a trip
via the U.S. east coast and redelivery Jorf Lasfar at $16,000 daily.
The 1983-built 64,741 dwt Eleftheria was said fixed to an unnamed
charterer with October 12-22 delivery Egypt for a trans-Atlantic round
with redelivery Skaw-Cape Passero at a very low $8,500 daily.

In voyage business, the 1998-built 73,605 dwt Transfield-relet Song
Shan Hai went to Navios with October 14-22 loading 70,000 tons 10% ore
from Murmansk to the Continent at $12.00.
Pacific Panamax business included word that the 2001-built 75,321 dwt
Nordweser was fixed to an unnamed charterer with October 06-10
delivery Singapore for a trip via Australia and redelivery Taiwan at
$23,000 daily.
Beteigeuze 2007 77053 dwt delivery Tomokomai 15/25 Oct trip via NoPac
redelivery Singapore-Japan $20500 daily - cnr
NYK has taken the 1994-built 70,000 dwt Golden Joy with October 10-20
delivery Far East for a trip via NoPac and redelivery in the East at
$20,000 daily.
It emerged that NYK fixed and failed with the 2001-built 74,107 dwt
Cretan Wave 2001 with October 06-10 delivery Niihama for a trip via
Abbot Point and redelivery Japan at $20,500 daily. Late word came that
the vessel fixed to Cargill for a NoPac round at $21,000 daily.
Blessing Bulk was the charterer of the 1988-built 76,650 dwt Grand
Anemi with October 04-06 delivery Shanghai for a trip via NoPac and
redelivery on the Continent (int. Flushing) at $16,000 daily.
The 1986-built 69,497 dwt Yao Hai with October 05-10 delivery east
coast India for a trip via Indonesia and redelivery China at $12,000
daily.
CAPESIZE
========
Capesize business opened the week very quietly. In the Atlantic,
there were few cargoes quoted, but rates appeared to be holding at
last dones. A first-half November coal cargo did Richards
Bay/Rotterdam at $16.50. In the Pacific basin, rates held, but
sources said this was the only comfort as there appeared to be no
immediate sign of a turn-around. A Port Hedland/Xingang cargo fixed
around $12.25. The Baltic Capesize index gained another 56 points to
4310.
In Atlantic business, the 1986-built Alina II went to Swiss Marine
with November 01-10 loading 165,000 tons 10% coal from Richards Bay to
Iskenderun at $15.00 basis free das at disport.
>From the Pacific, the 1982-built 208,000 dwt Tinos Warrior was said
fixed on subjects to Oldendorff with October 01-03 delivery
retro-Rizhao for a trip via Brazil and redelivery on the Continent at
$21,000 daily.

FMG has reportedly fixed the 1985-built 179,000 dwt Hebei Tiger with
end-October loading 160,000 tons 10% ore from Port Hedland to Xingang
at $12.25.
HANDY/SUPRAMAX
==============
A very quiet start to the week from the Atlantic where rates dropped
again. This does not bode well for the rest of the week. A
Continent/India run with modern tonnage has now been done at $20,500
daily. There were not a lot of fresh cargoes offered today, with the
Continent and US Gulf regions particularly quiet. For Pacific
business, an India/Far East run via west coast Australia has
reportedly been offered a low $7,000 daily. The Baltic Supramax index
dropped 88 to 2276 today, while the Handysize index fell 46 to 1123.
In the Atlantic, Custodia reportedly fixed the 2007-built 48,338 dwt
Loyal Union with October 01-06 delivery on the Continent for a trip
with redelivery India at a weaker $20,500 daily.
Pacific business heard that the 2007-built 58,700 dwt Transfield-relet
Lycavitos has fixed to an undisclosed charterer with October-December
2008 delivery in the Pacific for a balance of period of about 11-13
months trading at about $29,750 daily.

Stowage Factor Explained
Seems that many folks have being asking what exactly is stowage factor, so here goes
Stowage Factor refers to the ratio of weight to stowage space required under normal conditions.
The number indicates how many cubic meters one metric ton of a particular type of cargo occupies in a hold, taking account of unavoidable stowage losses in the means of transport.
The stowage factor of a cargo may vary, since it depends on the packaging and the nature of the cargo.Where bale goods are concerned, an important parameter is whether they are transported compressed or uncompressed,
Other goods have stowage factors which vary depending on the degree to which they have been processed.
